Margaret George in Conversation with Francesca Tataranni

Bestselling author MARGARET GEORGE has brought history to vivid life with her critically acclaimed biographical novels of historical figures, among them Helen of Troy, Mary Magdalene, Cleopatra, Mary Queen of Scots , Elizabeth I, and Henry VIII. All six of her previous books are New York Times bestsellers, and collectively have sold more than 1.5 million copies. Bookends & Beginnings is incredibly excited to be hosting her on March 8 to discuss her newest epic work, THE CONFESSIONS OF YOUNG NERO, in which she casts her eye on the last member of Julius Caesar's dynasty, to remold and humanize the boy of whom history has made a caricature. Emperor Nero, who ascended to Rome's ultimate seat of power at sixteen, is enshrined in popular memory as a hedonist, a tyrant, and cunning executioner. But the truth behind the caricature reveals a boy, an artist, an athlete, and a ruler who was both a product of his time and his mother Agrippina's relentless ambition. Like Mary Beard's revisionist history of ancient Rome, SPQR, The Confessions of Young Nero both challenges our assumptions of that time period and taps into readers' fascination with the Empire. Readers of Philippa Gregory and fans of I, Claudius will find much to discover in George's latest novel.

Margaret George will be interviewed at the event by Northwestern University Classics Professor FRANCESCA TATARANNI, who teaches Latin language and literature and Roman history courses and serves as Director of the Latin program. Professor Tataranni designed a digital humanities research seminar titled "Ancient Rome in Chicago" which produced a highly innovative virtual walking tour of the city.
